Walter Randolph Johnson passed away on June 1, 2024, at the age of 94. He was born on the family farm in Elma, Iowa on April 7, 1930 to KC and Anna Johnson. Walt lived most his adult life in Akron, Ohio with a few years in South America. He is preceded in death by his parents KC and Anna Johnson, wife of 69 years Kathryn, his sisters Alna, Dagney, Wanda Hansen and Sonja (Keith) Olmanson and his brothers Dean, Charles and Marland.
Walter is survived by his sons Randolph (Deborah), Warren (Casey) and Randy’s three children Matthew (Bernie), Jessica (Austin) and Caleb (Lara). Walt was Super Grandpa to Noah, Ann, Walter, Sullivan, Thatcher, Mary and Ethan; brothers Donald (Claire) of Phoenix, AZ and Waldon (Peggy) of Cresco IA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Walt met his future bride, Kathryn Rose Reisner while they attended Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). They were married August 21,1952. Walt enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korea War with the 3rd Division. He received his honorable discharge with the rank of Sargent in 1953. After his service he attended Purdue University where he earned a BS degree in Chemistry.
Walt worked at General Tire International for 30 years and traveled extensively to 68 countries. He was an active member of Fairlawn Lutheran Church and VFW Post 349 in Fairlawn. Super Grandpa loved his family and enjoyed playing on the floor with all the kids regardless of his age. He will be missed and his joy of elephants will be passed on to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Monday, July 29, 2024 at Fairlawn Lutheran Church at 11:30 a.m. Rev. James Gau officiating; followed by a luncheon. The inurnment will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m.
