Thomas Joseph Coyne, Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, after a long and full life.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Thomas was the proud son of an Irish immigrant, holding dual citizenship in the U.S., as well as Ireland. He was a distinguished academic, author, and businessman who made a lasting impact in both education and finance. He graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School before going on to earn a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, an MBA from Kent State University, and a BBA from Marshall University. He also pursued postgraduate work at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan. He founded the investment banking firm, Coyne and Associates, Inc. in 1967 and managed money for clients while simultaneously serving as a tenured professor of finance and economics. Over the course of his academic career, he held positions at several fully accredited university business (MBA) programs and authored or contributed to numerous books, academic journals, and newspaper articles. He also was an active arbitrator who served the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service for many years.
A combat veteran of the Korean Conflict, Tom served as an infantryman stationed at Sandbag Castle. Throughout his life, he exemplified determination, working full-time as a brakeman on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad while completing his undergraduate degree in just three years and later serving as a credit manager for The B.F. Goodrich Company while earning his MBA.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Karen Volpe, his brother, Donald Coyne and sister, Helen Yeager. He is survived by his sister; Mary Mulato, daughter; Kathleen Bergh, sons; Kevin Coyne (Colleen), Kenneth Coyne (Anne), and Thomas J. Coyne III (Diana), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a grandfather of twelve and a great-grandfather to five.
