Sister Dorothy Mattingly, O.P.

Sister Dorothy Mattingly, OP, the former Mary Elizabeth Mattingly, 92, died on Thursday, December 30, 2020 at Rockynol Care Center, Akron, OH. Sister Dorothy, born in Akron,OH on May 14, 1928, the daughter of William and Bernice Mattingly, entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, Ohio, now Dominican Sisters of Peace, from Annunciation Parish in Akron on August 30, 1948. She made religious profession on June 20, 1950. She received both her BSE from St. John College, Cleveland in 1956 and her MSE in 1968.

Sister Dorothy taught at St. Vincent, St. Paul, and St. Mary in Akron; St. Dominic, Youngstown; and St. Mary, Wooster. She was principal at St. Vincent and Immaculate Conception in Akron. From 1964-72, she served as Diocesan Supervisor for the Cleveland Diocese. She also was Educational Consultant for the Southern Region of the Diocese and Regional Supervisor for the Youngstown Diocese. She was elected to a four-year term as Councilor for her Congregation in January 1973. After she retired, she resided and did community service at Our Lady of the Elms Motherhouse. Because of health issues, Sister Dorothy was transferred to Rockynol in November 2020.

Sister Dorothy belonged to several organizations including president of the International Reading Association and board member of the Health Education Center and Our Lady of the Elms School Board.

Sister Dorothy is survived by brother, William; sister, Eileen Hagenbaugh and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Timothy; and sisters, Dorothy Wade and Jean Albright.

Because of the current situation, a private burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be scheduled later.
