SISTER DENISE MACKO, OP
Sister Denise Macko, the former Mary Louise Macko, died at the age of 93 on December 25, 2022, at Regina Health Center, Richfield, OH. Sister Denise was born on October 7, 1929, daughter of Andrew and Mary Louise Macko in Youngstown, OH. She was the youngest of four children, including one brother and two sisters. She worked as a librarian and teacher before entering religious life. Sister Denise entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, now Dominican Sisters of Peace, on August 15. 1959 from St. Edward Parish, Youngstown, OH. Her First Profession of Vows took place on August 4, 1961. She graduated from Liberty School in 1947. She received her BS in Mathematics and Chemistry from Youngstown University in 1951 and MS from the University of Notre Dame in 1968.
Sister Denise taught chemistry and physics at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, Akron; and Our Lady of the Elms High School, Akron, where she taught and later was principal from 1970-73. From 1982-88, she taught chemistry part time at the University of Akron and studied computer science there. From 1988-91, she was a computer programmer for Tru-Fit in Medina. Since 1991, she did computer design for the Elms Motherhouse as well as for the congregation. Her creativity was evident with her decorations, crafts and many cards, brochures, signs, etc. that she designs on her computer. She loved to travel and did hiking through Summit County Metro Parks for many years. Due to age and health issues, she was transferred to Regina Health Center.
Sister Denise was preceded in death by her parents, brother and two sisters. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 5th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Elms Convent Chapel, 1230 W. Market St., Akron. Visitation is one hour before beginning at 9:00 a.m. Per her request, Sister has been cremated,
