Robert (Bob) F. McDowell Sr., 91, passed away peacefully on January 29 after a long illness.
Born in Akron, Bob attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and graduated from the University of Akron. He was a Lieutenant in the Army after ROTC. Bob enjoyed a successful nearly 40-year career at Continental General Tire, beginning in the advertising department and retiring as National Manager Original Equipment/National Account Truck Tire Sales. A leader inside and outside of work, Bob volunteered in many religious, educational, healthcare, and arts-related organizations throughout his life.
Bob's priorities were his enduring Catholic faith and family. He was happiest when he was with his gang - his beloved wife of 54 years, Marianne; his children and their spouses; and his five grandchildren. Bob also adored and was very proud of his many nieces and nephews. A diehard St. V, Zips, and Cleveland Indians fan, he also enjoyed the theater and loved a good jazz set or an evening with the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom. Bob was a man of quick wit and much wisdom. One of the things he often said was, Water rises to its own level. In heaven, Bob has risen to his level.
Bob is preceded in death by parents Ella and Peter McDowell, brothers Raymond, Edward, and Joseph McDowell; and sisters Mary Maragaret Dies, Anne Sutter, and twin sisters Helen Gentner and Patricia Phillips.
Bob is survived by his wife Marianne, daughter Lauren (John Champ), son Robert (Diane), and grandchildren Peter, James, John, Colin, and Veronica; beloved in-laws; many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends.
