Norma Schmidt Obituary

Norma Ann Schmidt (Martin), 88, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, surrounded by her three children. Norma lived a full life to the end and her sparkling blue eyes and engaging smile brought joy to anyone who encountered her.

Norma was born in Akron, Ohio on July 28, 1933, to the late Constantine (Michael) and Virginia (Cea) Martin. She was a graduate of North High School and lived most of her life in Cuyahoga Falls where she was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Parish. Norma married Paul J. Schmidt, Jr., her beloved husband of 65 years, on April 14, 1956, and they lived in the home they built together until the end, just as she wanted it to be.

In addition to her husband Paul, she is survived by her son, Mark (Lorna) of Camarillo, California; daughter, Kim Schmidt Forsythe (Mark) of Cuyahoga Falls; son, Paul (Tamara) of Vienna, Virginia; grandchildren, Sean Forsythe (Whitney), Jessica O’Donnell (Paul), Meghann, Kathryn, Michael, Ashley, Alexander; great-grandchildren, Connor, Ella, James and Willow, several nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives, friends and loved ones.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Andrew and Albert (and sister-in-law Tina) Martin, and her sister, Alice (and brother-in-law Dan Testa).

Norma was an amazing mom, grandmother and great grandmother. She was full of spunk and fun. She loved to give hugs and kisses and enveloped you in her warmth. Her homemade pasta and egg drop soup were the very best. She always made sure everyone was well fed. She loved to talk. She was so curious. She wanted to know everything there was to know about you, and she was never shy about telling you what she thought. And among her favorite things was a visit to the casinos with her daughter Kim to try her luck at the slots. They were best friends.

“Your mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not well. Your mother lives inside your laughter, and she’s crystallized in every teardrop. She’s the place you came from, your first home; and she’s the map you follow with every step you take. She’s your first love and your first heartbreak, and nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space, not even death.” (Author unknown).

Our family thanks the medical community and caregivers of Summa Akron City Hospital (especially the trauma and acute palliative care units) for the excellent and loving care she was given to comfort her in her final hours. She was surrounded by angels.

The celebration of her life will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1905 Portage Trail, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44223. Private interment Northampton Cemetery at a later date.
