Nila June Mason, age 88, passed away on September 29, 2024. Born on June 28, 1936, in Proctor, West Virginia, Nila graduated from Magnolia High School in 1954 and pursued a nursing career at Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Wheeling, West Virginia. She completed her training at Philadelphia General Hospital before moving to Akron, Ohio, to be with her husband, Sherwood, whom she met at a community dance during their teenage years. They married on August 4, 1957, at Antioch Church in Proctor, West Virginia.
A devoted member of The Chapel in Green, Nila participated in church activities and Sunday school classes. She had a passion for music, enjoyed singing, and was a talented piano player. She enjoyed listening to country and bluegrass music and loved vacationing in Florida, California, Virginia Beach, and especially Bar Harbor, Maine.
Nila dedicated 40 years to serving as a nurse at Akron General Hospital, primarily in the Emergency Room. Her caring and nurturing ways extended beyond her profession into her family life. Nila’s dedication to her family was unwavering. She was the heart of the Mason household, always ensuring that her home was filled with warmth and love. She instilled strong family values in her son, David, supporting him and her daughter-in-law, Marcie, in their endeavors and always expressing pride in their achievements. Her commitment to these values was also carried forward by her grandsons, Brent and Evan, and her great-grandchildren, Daulton and Mazie, who continue her legacy of love and togetherness. Nila’s kindness and devotion to family will forever remain in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.
Nila is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Sherwood Mason; her son, David (Marcie) Mason of Copley, OH; her grandsons, Brent Mason of Wadsworth, OH, and Evan Mason of Columbus, OH; her great grandchildren, Mazie and Daulton; her brother, Marion Junior (Janet) of South Carolina; and her sister-in-law, Genelda Mason of West Virginia. Nila was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Stella (Blake) Parsons, and her great-grandson, Travis Mason.
Calling hours will be held at Ciriello and Carr Funeral Home, 39 S Miller Rd, Fairlawn, OH 44333, from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, October 5th, followed by a service at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in her name. The family would like to thank the staff at The Inn at CoalRidge for their kind and compassionate care.
