Matilda passed away on January 1, 2024 at the age of 99 in the care of Cleveland Clinic Hospice and Brookdale Retirement Center. She was born to Freda and Harry Curley on May 12, 1924 in Akron, Ohio. After graduating from West High School, she attended Akron University then continued studying in New York City at the Parsons School of Design.
Tillie, as most preferred to call her, enjoyed art and classical music. On returning to Ohio, she met a returning veteran, Sam Johnson, and they married in 1947. They were blessed with two children, Andrew and Karon. During the 60's, Tillie volunteered at the local hospitals and became a charter member of the Day at the Races. She was widowed in 1967 with the premature death of her husband.
In 1978, Tillie married Harold Blackwood and they both enjoyed the outdoors and traveling. They spent their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida where Tillie returned to her love of painting. She became a sustaining member of the Art League of Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach Art Center, winning many awards and ribbons. When in Akron, she became a member of the Cuyahoga Art Center and Hudson Center of Art. Tillie also belonged to the Woman's City Club and Welcome Wagon.
Preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 31 years, Harold, and brother George Curley. She is survived by her children Andrew Johnson, Karon Johnson Stewart, both of Copley; sister, Elaine Michaels Davenport of Fairlawn; sister-in-law, Amy Curley of Bath; grandchildren, Kristopher (Julie) Johnson and Paul Johnson of South Bend, Indiana; Meredith (Steve) Spengler of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; Mark (Holly) Johnson of Tallmadge; and seven great-grandchildren.
Matilda (Tillie) was a life-long member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Ciriello and Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd. in Fairlawn, where friends may call from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
The family would like to thank the great care given to her by the Cleveland Clinic Hospice organization (especially Dave and Donna who took extra special care of her in her final weeks.)
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greek Orthodox Church or Cleveland Clinic Hospice Center.
