John (Jack) Steurer (95) passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2023
Jack was born September 19th, 1927, to the late George and Elizabeth Steurer in Akron, OH. He graduated from Coventry High School in 1945 and went on to serve in The United States Army during the Korean War.
After returning home from Korea, Jack married the love of his life, Rosa Anna Reischman, on August 8, 1953. Together, they raised 6 children. Jack and Rosa Anna, with their family’s help, built the Steurer Family home on Proehl Drive. The home was a source of great pride for Jack. He loved keeping the lawn manicured and planting flowers in his rock garden. Jack constructed sandstone walls, moved bushes, and built patios. Maintaining the home was a labor of love for him.
The unconditional love Jack had for his family was shadowed only by the love he devoted to his faith. Jack and Rosa Anna practiced their faith as members of the newly formed St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. They both donated countless hours of time and talents to both the church and the school.
Jack was blessed with a dynamic personality and an unforgettable laugh. His laugh was cherished by everyone who knew him. Jack and Rosa Anna’s home hosted countless celebrations of love and laughter and Jack was always the life of the party. He was often spotted dancing all night at family celebrations and enjoying his signature drink of scotch and water.
Jack worked in paper sales for many years with both Millcraft Paper and the Mead Corporation. In 1972, he purchased The Stationery Shop and transformed the small print shop into a successful printing operation during his 40 years as owner. In 1983 he was awarded the Graphic Arts Man of the Year by the Akron Craftsman Printing Club for his efforts.
In 1991 Jack’s focus shifted due to Rosa Anna’s illness. He devoted every day for over 4 years to having lunch with her at Pleasant View and helping the staff there in any way he could. After Rosa Anna’s death in 2004, Jack started a new chapter of his life and faith in moving to Silver Lake Towers and becoming a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Jack simply loved life. A grateful life well lived. He practiced generosity and concern for his fellow man on a level rarely seen. He truly embraced the term service above self every day of his life. Jack believed in the purity of doing good deeds for the benefit of others and never gaining attention for himself. He believed in doing his very best and in leaving the world better than he found it.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosa Anna Steurer; sisters Marjorie Steurer, Margaret (Peggy) Cornell; brothers George (Bill) Steurer, Edward Steurer, and Thomas Steurer
Jack is survived by his children, John (Michele) Steurer, Thomas (Linda Motil) Steurer, Andrew Steurer, Mary Jo Fultz, Brian (Teresa Wright) Steurer, and Brenda (Patrick) Rowland; grandchildren, Stephanie, Jonathan, Christopher, Nicholas, McKinsey, Austin, Jacob, Jennifer, Brooke, Kathleen, and Joseph; great-grandchildren, Madison, Piper, Ian, Dominic, and Jameson; sisters, Mary Lou Krieg, Elizabeth (Liz) McGonigal, and Kathleen (Kate) Fischer; brother, Lawrence (Larry) Steurer.
