James Bonanno passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 30, 2025, surrounded by family.
James(Jim)was born in Akron, Ohio on October 6, 1939, to James E. Bonanno and Mae Willow Powers. He is survived by sons, Michael(Tina)Bonanno and Matthew(Deeneal)Bonanno, both of Westerville Ohio, sister, Connie(James)Carey, sister, Linda(David)Cameron, brother, Joseph Bonanno, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. James grew up in Akron where he attended Garfield High School. He later enlisted in the United States Army where he was a Paratrooper in the 325th Infantry Regiment 82nd Airborne Division as well as a light weapons instructor for the infantry.
James had an entrepreneurial spirit and during his career was owner and President of multiple automotive dealerships in the state of Ohio. Many of his automotive successes were recognized by peers and colleagues as well as automotive manufacturer executives at the highest level. He touched, influenced, taught, endorsed and paved the way for many young people in the automotive industry that later went on to reach their goals and make a name for themselves in business. He was also a fan and had a passion for thoroughbred horses, starting his own team and breeding farm in Northeast Ohio. Some of his horses, which he liked to refer to as “athletes” competed in races on the race card during the Ohio Derby day.
James was an exceptional cook. Feeding family and friends and sharing conversation were among some of his most favorite things in life. He lived a very active lifestyle, spent countless hours outdoors caring for property and horses. James loved his sons immensely and carried a profound sense of pride for all three boys. His two sisters held a special place in his heart: family man at his core.
The Bonanno family would like to thank the caring staff at The Laurels of Gahanna for all of their efforts over the last few years taking such good care of James, especially during the final days.
A service and military honors for James will take place at The Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery 10175 Rawiga Rd, Seville, Ohio on Wednesday May 14, 2025, at 2:00pm.
