IRENE STURGEON DIES AT AGE OF 100.
Irene Mathilda Julia (Sunram) Sturgeon, who had returned to the Akron area from Florida recently, passed away on January 3, 2021 at The Inn at Apple Ridge in Richfield after a short illness.
Irene was born on March 5, 1920 in Frazee, Minnesota, the daughter of Fredrick and Mathilda Sunram.
During WWII, she and her sisters travaled to Washington, D.C. to work as part of the US wartime effort. She worked both in medical offices as well as the American Red Cross. Afterwards she returned to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota where she met her husband-to-be, Charles H. Sturgeon
Eventually, Irene and Charles came to Akron where Charles worked for many years at the BF Goodrich Company, and where they raised their three children. They were long-time members of Grace Lutheran Church and of Congress Lake Country Club. Following Charles’ retirement, they moved to Greencastle, Pennsylvania, where they were members of Evangelical Lutheran Church, and then eventually to Oldsmar, Florida, where they were members of Bethel Lutheran Church.
Irene, an accomplished artist, was known for her quiet, friendly good humor. Her family was everything to her. Having said that, she had a great many friends in a great many places.
She will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by Charles, her dearly beloved husband of 52 years, as well as her sisters, Lorna Amdal and Sadie Steuart.
Irene is survived by her sister, Ruth Jenkinson of Fargo, North Dakota; her children, John Sturgeon of the Isle of Man, British Isles, Ruth Krise of Akron, Ohio and William Sturgeon of Charlotte, North Carolina; as well as her beloved grandchildren, Eric and Dennis Sturgeon, both of Norwich, England, Stephanie Krise (Sayer) of Cleveland, and Jenelle (Krise) Gruesen of North Canton; great-grandchildren, William and Noah Gruesen, and numerous nephews and nieces.
In lieu of calling hours, family gatherings will be held in Fairlawn, Ohio as well as Greencastle, Pennsylvania where Irene will be laid to rest next to Charles.
