Geraldine R. Schlegel
Geraldine Schlegel (nee Swartz) Noni, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2024, in her home.
Gerry was born on September 17, 1925, to John and Olive Swartz. She had an older brother, Jack the preceded her in death.
Geraldine grew up in Firestone Park. She attended St. Paul's, Garfield High School and The University of Akron. She met the love of her life, Charles Schlegel (Chuck) while at Garfield and later married him. They were married 41 years, and raised two daughters, Barb and Cathy.
Gerry had many hobbies and interests, but sports was at the top of her list. She loved watching the Guardians and over the past few months, she said several times that she saw them win one World Series and she hopes for a second this year. Gerry also was an avid bridge player and played bridge with her high school friends for over fifty years. She loved crafts of any kind and was involved with a group that met on Thursdays for years. She loved going to the community center to take different classes, but tap dancing was her favorite and she participated until she was 86. On Wednesdays, she had a group that went to McDonald's just to chat and catch up with what was going on. She truly loved being around people. Gerry also volunteered with Twiggs, The PGA, First Night Akron, Akron Children's Hospital, The Tree Festival and the Akron Marathon.
Gerry loved her family more than anything. The last few days she was more worried about all of them than herself. She was always asking about their jobs, school and who won in the game they played that weekend.
Preceded in death by her husband, Charles and daughter, Barbara Donnelly. She is survived by daughter, Cathy Kunkel (Thomas); son-in-law, Daniel Donnelly; grandchildren, Amy Marzich (John), Michael Rizzo (Kellie), Jennifer Victor (Brad), Alison Johnson (Jacob); ten great-grandchildren, and two special ladies that visited her daily, Paula Victor and Carole Zachardy.
