George E Cooney

George E. Cooney, 86, passed away unexpectedly on June 15, 2026.

George was born in Akron, Ohio, to John and Julia Cooney. From an early age, he displayed exceptional athletic talent and was recognized as a gifted multi-sport athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball, and football throughout his high school years. He graduated from St. Mary High School in 1957.

Following graduation, George proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted in 1958 and served honorably until his discharge in 1964.

After his military service, George built a long and dedicated career with Chrysler, where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring.

George will be remembered for his lifelong love of sports, especially Cleveland teams, a passion he proudly shared with and passed on to his children and grandchildren. He also had a lifelong love of reading and a particular fascination with science fiction. When he was not on the golf course, he could often be found spending peaceful hours on his back deck observing wildlife. An avid bird enthusiast, George especially enjoyed identifying the many species of birds that visited his yard throughout the seasons.

George was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia Cooney; and his brothers, John Cooney Jr. and Thomas Cooney.

He is survived by his loving sister, Christine Green; his daughters, Diane Myers, Lee Ann Kasper (John), and Jo Ellen Cooney (Quentin Marques); and his son, Bryce Cooney. George also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren—Madison (Ryan), Mitchell, Jake, Aidan, and Logan—and one beloved great-grandchild, Lucas, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

In accordance with George's wishes, no funeral or memorial services will be held.

Those who wish to honor his memory are invited to make a charitable donation to The Challenge Golf Program, a cause that was meaningful to him.

George will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
