Frederick Ost Obituary

Frederick James Ost, of Fairlawn, passed away on December 9, 2020. He was born September 1, 1932 in Akron to the late Raymond and Margaret (McCabe) Ost. He graduated from St. Vincent High School (’50), The University of Akron and Kent State University. He earned degrees in Business and Secondary Education as well as a master’s degree in Administration. While at the University of Akron, he was a member of the Lone Star Fraternity and played varsity football. He later served as president of the Varsity “A” Alumni Association. He began his career as a teacher and coach at Akron Central High School. He then served as a teacher and head football coach at both Revere High School and Lakewood St. Edward. He went on to multiple roles in administration at Revere and served as president of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. During retirement, he continued his passion for education at National Education Corporation and supervised student teachers at the University of Akron. Fred was an active and faithful member of Saint Hilary Parish.

Fred was Summit County Coach of the Year following an undefeated football season at Revere in 1966. At St. Ed’s he was The Plain Dealer and Crown Conference Coach of the Year in both 1970 and 1971. In 2000, Fred was awarded Revere High School’s Distinguished Educator Award for his outstanding accomplishments in teaching and administration. The Revere Football Captain’s Award was named in his honor in 2010. Surrounded by his entire family, Fred was inducted into the Revere High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

Fred was the recipient of the prestigious Fr. Thomas Mahar Outstanding Alumni Award in 2000 for his devoted service to the St. V/M community. He was a member of the Executive Board of Trustees at St. Vincent-St. Mary for which he received their outstanding service award in 2006. He also served as a founding member of the Northeast Ohio Autism Society.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Tom and sister-in-law Heather MacCurdy.

Fred is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 60 years, Kathy, who was his greatest joy, daughters Beth (Tim) Marsh and Amy (Tom) Hissong, son David (Melissa), grandchildren Brian, Kevin, and Jason Marsh, Katelyn, Emily, and Megan Hissong and Braden and Nathan Ost, sister Ellen (Ronald) McAvoy, sisters-in-law Robin Merrill, Laurie (Steve) Scattini and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was his children’s and grandchildren’s biggest supporter in all their activities. Fred was an honorable man who acted with compassion and integrity. He exemplified great faith, loyalty to others and hard work. He will be remembered as a kind and giving man touching countless lives in service to others.

A special thank you to the staff at The Arbors of Fairlawn. They treated Fred like family and their loving care brought peace of mind to our entire family.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Hilary Parish Foundation or to scholarship funds in his name at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School or Walsh Jesuit High School.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, we will celebrate his life by receiving friends and family on Sunday April 11, 2021 from 2-5pm at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd in Fairlawn. and a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, April 12 at 1pm at St. Hilary Church.
