Ellen Martucci

Ellen Martucci passed away at the impressive age of 96 years on October 30 after a short illness.

Ellen was born on October 11, 1928, in Akron, Ohio and spent her entire life on the west side of Akron. She graduated from Villa Maria high school in Malvern, PA and, avoiding the call to service with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisterhood, matriculated with a full music scholarship to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. As a major in vocal studies and piano, she excelled for two years before sustaining a major knee injury while playing basketball. She returned to Akron for surgery and rehabilitation. During her time home, she took a job with Saint Sebastian’s Catholic Church in Akron and never returned to Duquesne. She instead had found her calling in Christ as an organist and vocal soloist for countless masses, weddings and funerals. She also taught music at the school and managed the student and adult choirs. She touched thousands of lives during her 65 years of service to the church and was proud of the many choirboys and girls who became priests and nuns. She retired at the age of 83. The choir loft at Saint Sebastian’s is named in her honor. She also found time to marry the love of her life John, raise 6 children, teach private voice and piano lessons and volunteer for many church committees.

Ellen will be remembered for her faith in God, her service to her church and community, her unwavering commitment to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her warm smile and the best tomato sauce an Irish woman ever made.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, John in 2006; sisters, Agnes, Bridget, Kathleen; and brother, Jim. She is survived by sister, Sister Mary HM; daughters, Michalene (Debbie), Mary and Caroline (Steve); sons, John (Sheri), Paul (Laura) and Brian (Laura); 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ohio Living Memory Care and Hospice for their loving care of our mother during her final years of life.

Mass of Christian Burial 11am., Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave. Akron, OH 44320 where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Private interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
