Dr. Robert John Burkhard I

Dr. Robert John Burkhard I, 100, of Cuyahoga Falls, peacefully passed away on January 30 th, 2022. Bob was born in Springfield, Ohio on January 1st, 1922. He attended medical school at St. Louis University and graduated (1946) to continue his residency at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, Ohio. Prior to his time in the military, he married Norma (Fisher) Burkhard (1946). He was stationed in Guam, Iwo Jima, and Tokyo (1948-1950) as Commanding Medical Officer for the US military. Following his time serving the military, he moved back to Ohio to serve as Chief of Surgery at St. Thomas Hospital. Shortly after, he opened his Private Surgical Practice in which he continued until 1990. Bob and Norma then moved to Sarasota, Florida, to continue serving the community at the Senior Friendship Center and St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Sarasota until 2010 when Bob retired. Bob will be deeply missed by his children, Robert (Suzanne) Burkhard II, Kristen (Mark) Cole, and Drew Burkhard; grandchildren, Alysha, Lauren, and Robert Burkhard III; great-grandchildren, Chandler and Zachary Lee. He was preceded in death by his father, John E. Burkhard, mother, Mary (Hufnagel) Burkhard, wife, Norma (Fischer) Burkhard, daughter, Cindy (Burkhard) Thomas, grandson, Stephen Lee, and the many friends he has made throughout the years. Bob’s contagious smile and sense of humor will be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 8th , at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church followed by inurnment at Oakwood Cemetery.
