MaryAnn Carlin,

MaryAnn Carlin, born February 15, 1935, to Doctor William J. and Madeline M. (Bernard) Pittenger, died January 21, 2019 in Cuytahoga Falls, OH.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert J. Carlin (1990); her sister, Patricia; and her grandson, Scott Ferguson. She is survived by children, Kevin Smead (Sue Kreusch), San Rafael, CA: Brian Smead (Patty), Wadsworth; Karen Smead (Gary Minke), Coleman, FL; Kristin Whitney (Ken), Mason, OH; Eric Smead, Cuyahoga Falls; and Maureen Shaffer (Michael), Fruitland Park, FL. She also leaves grandchildren, Spencer, Peter, Melanie, Shelly, Andy, Brian, Jared, Nicholas and Michael II, as well as great-grandchildren Michael III, Emmy, Kady and Mira. Also surviving are her sisters, Catherine (Paul) Hayden, Margaret "Peggy" Rimedio (Nick) and Eileen Koby; her friend, Rita Marks, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

MaryAnn retired in 2000 from the Akron Municipal Court Probation Department where she began as a volunteer in 1971 and retired as Chief Probation Officer.

A graduate of Saint Vincent High School, she attended the College of Mount St. Vincent, Bronx, New York, and graduated from the University of Akron where she was a member of Theta Phi Alpha sorority.. She was a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor.

Following retirement, MaryAnn worked as a community volunteer, serving the United Way, Oriana House, Summit County Juvenile Court, the Summit County ADM Board and the Akron Health Department.

The family wishes to thank Senior Helpers and Maplewood at Cuyahoga Falls.

Calling hours 2-5pm Sunday at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 810 Portage Tr, Cuyahoga Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial 11am Monday, Jan. 28 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Cremation and inurnment at Northampton Cemetery to follow at a later date.

When I saw the picture accompanying this notice, I knew immediately she was my Fourth Grade teacher, Mrs. Smead, from St. Joseph School. Today I found out we are also Theta Phi Alpha sisters.

My sincere sympathy to her family. May your many happy memories help you through your sorrow .
