John Laursen Helbig

John Laursen Helbig, 64 died peacefully July 6, 2018 surrounded by loved ones.

A lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers local 18, John was a skilled operator. He loved being outdoors including skiing, gardening, sailing, and exploring nature with the people he loved best.

He loved open wheel motor sports, in his youth he was a diver in the Formula Ford circuit and continued his passion for exotic cars throughout his life. John savored moments of stillness, whether it was lying in the hammock or floating in the ocean. He was charming and sociable, often stopping to speak with people he met throughout his day. His charisma was magnetic, even luring his long time love from across the country by phone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia and Jack Helbig. He is survived by his girlfriend of 14 years, Lisa Breslow,; his daughter, Olivia (Patrick) Middendorf; and granddaughter, Eloise; step-mother, Patricia Helbig; siblings, Camilla Glenn, Cherry Jelm, Rick Jelm, Melissa Powers, Holly Helbig, and numerous nieces and nephews.
