Rhoda Bolka

Our wonderful mother, Rhoda Bolka, died peacefully on June 9, 2018 at home.  It was the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  Born in Akron, Ohio, Rhoda lived most of her life in Cuyahoga Falls where she married and raised her family.

She was a graduate of Akron General Hospital School of Nursing and served as president of her class.   She worked for more than thirty years at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital.  Rhoda was the first head nurse of the ICU and she worked in the ER for many years.

She was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.  She was known as a wonderful dessert maker.  Her cookies, pies, and cakes were a delight at family events.  Hat making was a special hobby.

In 2003, Rhoda moved to Muncie, Indiana, to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Bolka, and their young children. She resided in one of the Westminster Villas showcasing her flowers, enjoying her neighbors, playing bridge, and bike riding in the neighborhood every day.  She was a parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi and volunteered in the parish office.  Rhoda also volunteered at Ball Hospital for many years in the ER as well as escorting patients throughout the hospital.

In December of 2012, she moved to South Bend, Indiana, to be near and in the care of her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and David Torma.

Rhoda was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Bolka; son, Robert; and brother, Roy Fanoni and sister-in-law, Dorothy Fanoni.  She is survived by Janet and David Torma;  Bill and Nancy Bolka; cherished grandchildren, Jennifer, Julie, and Joseph Torma, Maria and husband Kenneth Baldwin, Kathryn and husband John Niswonger, Robert, Nathan, and Karaline Bolka, Rachel and husband Jeremy Kline; great grandchildren, Kenneth David, Marianne Rose,  Therese Margaret, and Roman Elio Baldwin, Grace Kathryn, Rose Chiara, and Josephine Joy Niswonger, Ava Joy Torma-Holcomb and Deacon William Kline; beloved sisters, Rita Heller and Joyce Belock; brother-in law, Ray Heller; many special nieces and nephews.

I have many fond memories of Rhoda from working with her in the ER at Cuyahoga Falls General. She did much good work over the years, and will never be forgotten. My sincere condolences to the entire family. May God bless you all.
