Otis B. “Doc” Giltner

Otis B. “Doc” Giltner passed away March 7, 2018. Doc was born to Otis B. Giltner,MD and Helen Marie (Eipper) Giltner on June 8, 1931 in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated from Sheffield High School in Sheffield, IL in 1949. Doc attended St. Ambrose College from 1949 to 1951, He then joined the US Navy on Aug. 10, 1951 and served in the 6th Fleet aboard the USS Worcester CLV144 as a Radioman. During his service, specifically, August 2, 1952, he was privileged to have a private audience with Pope Pious XII. After his discharge, he continued working on his business degree and graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1956. He met and married the love of his life, college librarian, Rose A. Leinen on November 17, 1956 in Davenport, IA.

Doc joined Mutual of NY in 1963 and opened an agency for MONY in Fairlawn, OH. Doc, who was one of the earliest individuals in Ohio to earn the Certified Financial Planner designation in 1986, and was the past president of Fairlawn Kiwanis. He was also a past member of the Fairlawn Chamber of Commerce and Fairlawn Rotary. Doc was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Providing help and compassion to those less fortunate was always extremely important to Doc. He co-founded the Society of St. Vincent DePaul at St. Hilary Church in Oct of 1981. During his many years of service he took care of countless individuals in need of St. Vincent DePaul's generosity. Doc also spearheaded the Society's program to make sure every child in the city of Akron had a computer. This program enabled thousands of children to have access to a computer. Rose and Doc also founded “Blanket Sunday” at St. Hilary for those in need. This project spread through the entire Diocese of Cleveland.

His final charitable endeavor was to provide financial expertise and counsel to his very good friend Fr. Dismas. Doc proudly and passionately worked with Father Dismas and many other wonderful people in the opening of the Ibumba Ohio Friends Health Center in Uganda. In fact, due to his financial and advisory assistance, the Clinic's maternity unit is named The Rose and Doc Giltner Maternity Wing. In the days before his death, Doc was actively working on a water purification system for the people of Uganda.

Doc is survived by six children, Anne (David) Ricchuito, James (Gail), Jerome (Lisa), Jean Steiger, Michelle, and Mary (Doug) Pamer; sisters, Julie VanLoo, Sally Reiquam, and Marie Smith; grandchildren, Julie (Bill) Swartz, Valerie Ricchuito, Daniel (Taylor), Thomas (Megan), Elizabeth, John William (Erin), Jennifer, and Matthew Giltner; Benjamin, Olivia, David Giltner; Sara (Jeffrey) Monfort, Samantha (Luke) Messmann; Angela and Michaela Giltner; Catherine, Christopher, and Colin Pamer; eight great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Evelyn, Owen, Polly, Calvin, Joey, Nate, and Zach; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Rose; parents, Dr and Mrs. Otis B. Giltner; grandson, Michael Giltner; and sister, Fritz Hayman.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-6:30 Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd,. Fairlawn, OH 44333. The Rosary will be said at 6:15 by the Knights of Columbus.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Monday, March 12, 2018, 11am at St. Hilary Catholic Church, 2750 W. Market St., Fairlawn,
Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
